Film Debate #40 – Women’s role in society: secondary or essential?

Film: Where Do We Go Now? directed by Nadine Labaki (2011)

For the March film debate, which will take place during Women’s Rights Week, we have chosen a film featuring everyday heroines, Where Do We Go Now? (Et maintenant, on va où ?), directed by Nadine Labaki.

“These women are tough: they have all survived bereavement, violence, the hatred of the civil war, in a mountain village surrounded by landmines where the peace is fragile. The country is never identified — but it strongly resembles Lebanon — making this clever and surprising tale universal. The women are tired of grieving for their dead and will do anything to distract their husbands, sons and brothers from their warmongering. With the unexpected and funny help of an imam and a priest.”
