Chris Gardner is a sales representative who struggles to make a living. He tries to make ends meet, but his partner is getting less tolerant of their precarious situation. She eventually leaves him and their five-year-old boy, Christopher.

Left alone to care for his son, Chris tries very hard to find a job, to no avail. When he finally gets an internship in a prestigious brokerage firm, he gives it his all, even though he is not paid for his work. Unable to pay his rent, he finds himself on the street with Christopher. Father and son sleep in hostels and stations, looking for makeshift shelters from one day to the next.

Stumbling in the worst ordeal of his life, Chris continues to take care of Christopher, drawing strength from his son’s affection and trust in him to overcome the obstacles…
